The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has proposed requiring four key design and operational changes to the Boeing 737 MAX to address the safety concerns found in the tragic double accident that forced the plane to immobilize in March last year.

On Monday, the FAA sent a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) for an airworthiness directive (AD) on Boeing’s 737 MAX to the Federal Register Office for publication.

The NPRM proposes to require a series of design changes to address an identified unsafe condition. When the NPRM is published in the Federal Register, a 45-day public comment period will begin.

The FAA posted the NPRM on its website Monday to allow the public to begin the review early. The FAA will also place the Preliminary Summary of the FAA Review of the Boeing 737 MAX on file to assist with the review of the proposed AD.

The proposed airworthiness directive requires updated flight control software, revised display processing software to generate alerts, a review of certain flight crew operating procedures, and changes in the direction of some wiring packages.

Given the work that remains, it is not clear that the flights of the B737 MAX can resume before the end of the year.
