German industrial production falls sharply in September

German industrial production fell more than expected in September, according to data published on Thursday, which points to a persistent weakness in this powerful sector of Europe’s largest economy.

Industrial production fell 0.6% per month, according to figures from the Ministry of Economy. A Reuters survey pointed to a 0.4% drop.

Factories produced less equipment, intermediate and consumer goods, the data showed.

The August figure was revised upwards to an increase of 0.4%, instead of the 0.3% increase initially calculated.
