Investigate Tesla vehicle accidents

They will investigate Tesla vehicles for sudden acceleration.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the United States announced Friday that it will review a petition requesting a formal investigation of 500,000 vehicles from Tesla by the agency for reports of sudden unintended acceleration.

The petition affects the Tesla Model S in its versions from 2012 to 2019, to the Tesla Model X from 2016 to 2019, and to the Tesla Model 3 from 2018 and 2019, the agency said.

The petition mentions “127 complaints from consumers to the NHTSA involving 123 different vehicles. Reports include 110 crashes and 52 injuries. ”

Tesla did not comment immediately on Friday.

Many of the complaints speak of sudden acceleration incidents when parking in garages or sidewalks. Others noted that the sudden acceleration occurred in movement between traffic or while using assistance systems, and this situation caused shocks.

In one of the allegations, a driver said that a 2015 Tesla Model S 85D was locked in California when “moments later the vehicle began to accelerate towards the street and crashed into a parked car.”

The driver of another Tesla in Avondale, Pennsylvania, was entering the parking lot of a school when the vehicle accelerated on its own, according to the complaint, which also indicated the following: “He passed over the curb and crashed into a mesh fence metallic ”.

According to another complaint, a driver of a Tesla in Andover, Massachusetts, was approaching the door of his garage “when the car suddenly jumped forward” and “went through the garage door destroying two gates.” The Tesla stopped after crashing into the concrete wall of the garage.

In October, the agency said it was investigating whether Tesla should have removed 2,000 of its electric cars in May instead of launching a software update to fix a possible defect that could have resulted in battery fires in model vehicles. S and X from 2012 to 2019.

The 2,000 vehicles involved in the September petition to the NHTSA received an update of the battery management software last May in response to a possible defect that could cause fires not related to accidents.

The lawyer who filed the petition, Edward Chen, told Reuters in October that he is sure that “the figure far exceeds 2,000.” This investigation is still ongoing.

Last week, NHTSA said it was investigating the accident of a Tesla Model 3 on December 29 in which a passenger died after the vehicle collided with a fire truck parked in Indiana.

The crash is the fourteenth that involves Tesla in a special NHTSA collision investigation program, on suspicion that it occurred while using the so-called Autopilot or autopilot, or some other advanced driver assistance system.
